Production Diary, Day 14: Swapped to 4K for Card Space

The camera note on the final setup of the main schedule reads: "Swapped to 4K for card space."

I want that framed. Fourteen days of a crew squeezing everything it had into every frame, and on the last shot of the last scene of the main board, the cards themselves ran out of room. If you need a one-line biography of independent filmmaking, there it is. You use everything. Then you use the rest.

Today closed out the final-act block, back at the Sunrise Homeless Navigation Center on Menchaca Road, and with it the main unit schedule: Scenes 70, 76, 77 and the 78 series, forty-two takes on rolls A026 and A027. These are the final scenes of the film, and no, I am not going to tell you a single thing about them. The logline has taken you this far. The theater takes you the rest of the way.

What fourteen days built

Some numbers for the record, because I have been keeping score. Fourteen main-unit shooting days, May 18 through June 4. Camera rolls A002 through A027. Locations from Zilker to a lakeside pawn shop to two real homeless-services organizations to a cast member's living room. Hundreds of takes, dozens of scenes, dozens of actors, and one Dean Stanfield, who was in effectively all of it, playing one man's single longest day across three calendar weeks and keeping the thread unbroken the entire time.

The material Roderick McDaniel and Dean closed out together today is the reason this movie exists, with Mirtha Martinez's Miss Vaughn holding the other side of the ledger. Our 1st AD Michelle Ragay called the last main-unit wrap of the show, and it landed the way it always does, half cheer, half exhale.

Now, the honest asterisk: this is not quite the end of photography. The material slotted for a fifteenth day, a night shoot, is still ahead of us, along with the dream sequences and a small pickup list. That is normal, it was planned for, and it means this diary has a few more entries in it yet.

But tonight, the main board is done, and everybody on this crew earned the weekend twice over. To the whole company: thank you. See you at the pickups.
