Production Diary, Day 13: Where the Ending Lives

The script calls it the Pflugerville Shelter. The schedule calls this stretch the biggest block of the shoot, and today it set up downtown, the company basing out of the St. David's garage on the Trinity block. I have started calling it the destination, because in the geography of this movie, it is exactly that: the place Odie has been trying to reach since the first frame.

Today was our first day there, working Scenes 69, 71, 72 and 75. Twenty-six takes, all of it fitting on a single camera roll, A025, which makes this the most economical day of the entire production. That is not the number of a crew running out of gas in week three. That is the number of a crew that has spent thirteen days learning exactly what its director needs and now hands it to him in two or three takes.

The people of the final act

Mirtha Martinez has arrived as Miss Vaughn, and her material lives almost entirely inside this block, so this is her home stretch and her whole assignment at once. And Roderick McDaniel is back as Mr. Anderson, closing the loop he opened all the way back on day two at the shelter set. He shot one day, then held for nearly two weeks while we crossed Austin without him, and today he stepped back in as if no time had passed. For his character, no time has. That is the acting job: two weeks of real life, zero minutes of story.

I will say almost nothing about what happens in these scenes. The logline gets you to the door: one day, one curfew, a bed waiting if he can make it. What this final block contains is everything that word "if" is holding. It is the emotional payload of the picture, and the set today felt like a crew that knew it. Quieter between setups. Fewer phones out. Our director Nick Barr spent more time beside the actors than beside the monitor.

Dean Stanfield is thirteen days deep into a single fictional day. Whatever he has left, he is spending it here, and it shows in the best possible way.

One more day in the final-act block, across town at Sunrise tomorrow. Then the main board is done.
