Production Diary, Day 10: A Few Blocks Over

Total distance from last night's set to tonight's set: a few blocks. The Depot of Homes set went up at 2604 Aldrich Street, around the corner from the same stretch of East 51st we have been living on, and stacking these two days back to back was a deliberate piece of scheduling craft. Same basecamp logic, same corner of town, zero wasted motion. When people ask what a good UPM actually does, the answer is things like this, invisible until you notice them, and then you cannot stop noticing them.

Today was Scenes 57 through 60, twenty-nine takes, the leanest take count of the shoot so far. Lean because the day was built around two things that do not reward flailing: a confrontation and a car.

The confrontation belongs to A-Train, played by J.J. Fernandez, and it is the closest thing ODIE has to a scene where the temperature genuinely drops. The logline promises that Odie's own worst instincts are among the obstacles between him and that bed. A-Train is one of the external ones. Fernandez came in for a single day of work and left a dent in the movie. That has actually been a pattern with this cast, sixteen day players, every one of them load-bearing, and today was maybe the clearest proof yet.

Picture cars and patience

The other half of the day was practical driving work with Angela's car, with Edwina Thompson on her first day of the picture as Angela. Driving scenes are a discipline all their own. Every setup is a negotiation between what the camera needs, what safety requires, and what the light is doing while you negotiate. Our DP Lester Platt and 1st AD Michelle Ragay worked the problem methodically, and twenty-nine takes tells you how little was wasted.

Ten days down. Rolls A019 and A020 are with DIT Danny Keinarth, who at this point in the shoot has personally shepherded every frame of this movie through his station like a border official who actually likes his job.

The weekend brings a location I have been curious about since I first saw the schedule, because it is not a location at all in the usual sense. It is a cast member's actual house. Details Monday.
