ODIE in Post, Week 3: Thank You, Austin

Three weeks out from wrap, with the edit humming along in Los Angeles, it feels like the right moment to say something we couldn't say properly in the daily scramble: thank you, Austin.

ODIE is a film about homelessness made inside the world it depicts, and that only worked because real organizations let us in. Sunrise Homeless Navigation Center on Menchaca didn't just give us a location. They helped coordinate more than forty paid background roles for people from the unhoused community, so the faces in this film belong to the city it's about. Trinity Center downtown did the same, opening their doors for some of the biggest days on the schedule. Our director Nick Barr said it in an email during prep and it became the whole ethos: filming with you, not just at you.

The thank-yous go smaller and stranger too. Some of our sixteen locations came straight out of the company's own lives: Nick's own South Austin house and street carried the dream-world material, and one key interior was a cast member's house. And every shoot day started with bags of ice from King Daddy Ice, hauled out of an East Austin freezer. Indie film runs on exactly this kind of generosity.

Now, the part everyone asks about: festivals. Here's the honest version. The groundwork started before we even wrapped. Back on May 26, mid-shoot, the team was already sketching outreach materials, including a postcard built around Odie and Blu, arguably the two most watchable faces in the picture. There's a proper sales and festival deck now, and the target is the 2027 festival circuit. What there isn't, yet, is a finished film, so there are no submissions to report and won't be for a while. Anyone who tells you otherwise at this stage of post is selling something.
